What’s up everyone. After a small hiatus, welcome back. I had some things to take care of which is why no posts for a few days, but enough of that, let’s just get on with the first four matchups of the second round.
1. Ford V Ferrari vs 33. Bend It Like Beckham
Ford V Ferrari
Stars: Matt Damon, Christian Bale
Directed by: James Mangold
RT Score: 95%
Path So Far: Beat 64th seed The Air Up There with 65.2% of the votes.
Bend It Like Beckham
Stars: Keira Knightley, Parminder Nagra
Directed by: Gurinder Chadha
RT Score: 79%
Path So Far: Beat 32nd seed Whip It with 70.6% of the votes.
While Ford V Ferrari is an objectively better movie, this is going to be a tough matchup for it as Bend It Like Beckham has a pretty strong fanbase. It also got more votes in a tougher matchup too.
2. Raging Bull vs 34. Cool Runnings
Raging Bull
Stars: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
RT Score: 93%
Path So Far: Beat 63rd seed The Mighty Ducks with 54.2% of the votes.
Cool Runnings
Stars: John Candy, Leon
Directed by: Jon Turteltaub
RT Score: 78.5%
Path So Far: Beat 31st seed Caddyshack with 83.3% of the votes.
This is an interesting matchup because once again, the higher seed is an objectively better movie, with some considering Raging Bull one of the greatest films ever. But it just beat out The Mighty Ducks by one vote and Cool Runnings, just like that one, is a film that was powered by the Disney machine and for that reason, played in a lot of homes for a lot of years before streaming was a thing. This means it has the power of nostalgia on it’s side.
3. The Wrestler vs 30. Rocky
The Wrestler
Stars: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
RT Score: 93%
Path So Far: Beat 62nd seed Blue Chips with 68.2% of the votes.
Rocky
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers
Directed by: John G. Avildsen
RT Score: 81%
Path So Far: Beat 35th seed The Longest Yard with 75% of the votes
This one is a battle of two critical darlings in film, with both being nominated for plenty of Academy Awards. I can’t predict this one but for me, I will be sad to see either film go as I love them both.
51. The Waterboy vs 29. The Color Of Money
The Waterboy
Stars: Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates
Directed by: Frank Coraci
RT Score: 52.5%
Path So Far: Beat the 4th seed Creed with 55.6% of the votes.
The Color Of Money
Stars: Paul Newman, Tom Cruise
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
RT Score: 81%
Path So Far: Beat the 36th seed The Rookie with 53.3% of the votes.
The Waterboy has the title of the biggest upset in Round One, beating the 4th seed and one of my personal favourite films in Creed. It goes up against The Color of Money, one of Scorsese’s lesser known films.
There we have it, the first day of Round Two. Who are you gonna vote for? Make sure to follow the Sportcodex Twitter account to keep up with the action.
Until next time, PEACE!
